Saltburn Food Festival

The Saltburn food festival took place at Milton Street on Sunday 4th August 2013 and once again me and a few other family members were present. There were various stalls including people showing you how to make quality sausages, various spices from around the world, a wide and varied selection of sauces, home made shortbread, cup cakes, fine ales throughout the Cleveland and Yorkshire areas and fine wines from Europe and beyond.

The highlight of the show (which me sadly missed) was Kenny Atkinson a Michelin starred chef and winner of the TV’s Great British Menu. He prepared and cooked one of his speciality dishes for the watching crowd.

There was a bit of light entertainment, as you can see from the following pictures with the town crier and the hilarious tea ladies parading up and down the main street of Saltburn.

At the far end there was also a couple of art stalls with people exhibiting impressive pictures of past and present Saltburn and all it’s Victorian charm.

A good time was had by all and I dare say the Farmers market and local traders had a busy day at the till with the impressive amount of people in attendance.

Redcar Beacon – Vertical Pier

The much needed redevelopment of Redcar seafront which will eventually see approximately £70m spent over three years has been a welcome to a town which has been in decline for several years.

The main attraction of the seafront is the vertical pier officially called the “Beacon”. At first glance and from a distance it looks like a fluorescent helter skelter from a bygone era, but upon closer inspection is a very neat piece of architecture. The blot on this landscape is not this particular structure, but the horrible wind turbines to the north.

Since it’s opening in Easter of 2013 the vertical pier has enjoyed an unofficial head count of over 83,000, so it’s meeting it’s visitor targets and remember folks it’s FREE!

You are approximately 85ft above sea level which is the highest viewing point in the area. I’ve personally been up it twice and the views over Redcar and beyond are superb and well worth a visit. You have access to a lift or you can walk the seven flights of stairs (like me) and keep your fitness in check.

After all the excitement you can enjoy a nice coffee, soft drink, bacon bun or a superb ice cream from the cafe at the bottom of the structure. Although not the cheapest place in town for an ice cream, it’s well worth a visit.

There has been a lot of negative publicity about the “Beacon”, but it’s better than nothing at all and certainly a step in the right direction for a town which has been going backwards for over two decades.

Zetland Lifeboat Museum

Over 200 years ago, 7th October 1802 marked a very important event in the history of maritime rescue.

On that date, the Zetland lifeboat arrived at Redcar on the North East coast of England and began an illustrious service to the seafarers who risked their lives to ply their trade round the shores of Britain.

Alessi’s – Saltburn Restaurant

Alessi’s is an Italian restaurant in Saltburn. My one and only visit to this establishment with my wife was a disappointment and a definite thumbs down.

The service was slow and the food I received was poor. starter king prawns with a chilli dip tasted frozen to me. I got ravioli pockets for my main which tasted bland and my wife’s meal wasn’t any better.

We were planning on staying a while longer, but after our unpleasant experience we left at the earliest opportunity, paying at their outdated tillpoint. Why this place is so busy I’ll never understand?

Vista Mar – Saltburn Restaurant

Vista Mar in Saltburn has been renovated not to long ago in both the bar and restaurant areas and do excellent lunch time snacks up until 3pm.

They do Mediterranean and European dishes and the food is of good quality, but a bit on the dear side. Worth a visit and would probably go back again and the stout isn’t that bad either.

Spices – Saltburn Restaurant

Spices in Saltburn is another Indian restaurant and very keenly priced especially for specific meal times during the week. They also serve draught ale and lager at around £3.30 a pint which is an advantage over the nearby competitor.

I’ve been in there four times to date and enjoyed each meal and would certainly go back.
